Reading Week

Monday, February 19th, 2007

After a week of cramming and stressing over midterms, reading week is finally here.

I flew back in Ottawa for Reading Week to spend time with Renata. It’s great to see her again.  The air at home in Edmonton is once agained strained with more drama involving my brother.  So it’s a double bonus of being back here in Ottawa.

I flew in on Saturday with a chance to just veg out and destress.

Sunday we had dim sum with my friend Wei and his girlfriend to celebrate Chinese New Year.  This year is the year of the pig, and it’s my year as well!  Yes, I am a piggy.  It was good to see Wei, and he had some really good ideas for my porn website.  I guess he’d be one to know the business too :-p

Renata and I headed over to Bushtaka to buy some gear for our upcoming trip to the rockies. A 10 day backpack is no casual thing, so we have to look at gear really seriously.  The most important thing on our minds is weight and versatility.  Clothes and other things have to weigh a minimal since we’ll be lugging around a 10 days worth of food.  Every ounce adds up, so keeping every ounce off our backs really counts.

With that in mind, we bought a ton of merino wool clothes.  I have never spent so much money on clothes in my life. My T-shirt cost me $140, and my “heavier” sweater-like shirt cost me $200. Merino wool boxers came up to be like $50 a pair, and the long jongs were twice that much.  I also got a nice “packlite” windbreaker/rainjacket that weighs a few ounces for about $200.  For a university student like me, it’s a ton of money.  Well, it’s actually an insano amount of money for me.  But it is worth it.

Merino wool can be worn continuously for many days (and supposedly for weeks) without it ever getting stinky.  The stuff doesn’t let bacteria fester like in cotton (and especially like in synthetic “dry-fit” stuff).  So that means I only need just a few shirts and boxers to last me the whole 10 days.  Lovely hey?  It’s also an amazing material in terms of temperature moderation and moisture wicking.  So it’s quite awesome.

Anyways, today I just vegged around at home and fixed some stuff at her place.

My week looks to be pretty chill and fun.  It’s even given me time to relax and blog!

A Quick Buck?

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

Sorry for the lack of updates. My brain and time has been immersed into my side business. Yes, my porn site.

I’ve been kind of reluctant to post about my new little project, but I might as well get on with it since it is taking up a lot of my time.

I finally got around to getting it up and running, releasing it live on Tuesday. Traffic has been rolling in as I’m starting to understand how the “biz” works, and how to be good at it.

Tuesday I pulled in 24 unique hits to my site!

Wednesday: 428

Thursday: 290

Friday: 800

Today I expect 11000 unique hits to come through, as I’ve discovered a gold mine in garnering traffic.
All in all, I’ll have about 13000 hits by the end of the night in total since I’ve been up. And with that large number I’ll have amassed a grand total of $0.00 for my effort.

I knew getting into to this wouldn’t be easy, but the more I uncover about the business the more I realize that it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. At the same time, if I work my way up I’m sure things will pay off. It probably won’t be until my site hits 50k in traffic that I’ll make my very first sale.

Being a free porn webmaster earns a lot of the top dogs in the business half a million a year in sales. I’d love to reach that point sometime, but I know it’s not going to happen overnight. Most who get into this business don’t make much with it, and those that do make it have to pay their dues. Some of the webmasters I’ve been talking to took them 11 months before they made their very first dollar from internet porn.
I guess here’s a rundown of what I do:

I’m running what’s called a “babeblog”. It’s a blog like this, except everyday I make a blog post with a dozen or so pictures for free. I get the pictures from a sponsor, who gives me the content to market. If a visitor likes what he sees on my site, he’ll click the link to purchase a membership with my sponsor site. I get 50% of what my sponsor is charging plus 50% of the “rebills”. That is, if Joe Schmoe buys smut through me and keeps his account for a year, I get half of the revenue of what he pays for the year.

Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? The tricky part is to actually market the site and gather visitors. The internet porn industry is much larger than the games industry and pulls in a dozen or two billion dollars a year… however, there’re probably more than that number of porn sites out there. Worse yet, I have to convince my visitors that the content I’m fronting is worth the money, and we all know how hard it is to pull a shiny penny from someone over the internet.

The act of gathering traffic is a lot more sophisticated than it seems. There are really complex systems out there that monitor and redirect traffic. I guess for me to be successful, I’ll have to investigate deeply how it all works.

The ace up my sleeve: my m4d computing science skills! Yes, all those fancy algorithms and techniques I thought I’d never apply are actually very applicable for this business. I have to find ways to pull users to my site to look at content they want to look at. This involves all sorts of filtering algorithms, but also I have to figure out how Google’s pagerank system works to capitalize on Search Engine hits. Google is king of the internet, and even more so in the porn industry. If you type in “Teen Girls” into Google, the very first site that comes up is a porn site that pulls in more than a million a year.

I just want my own piece of that huge pie!

PS: No, I will not list the URL to my site!

I’m a Cartoon

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

My computer graphics assignment took me only half an hour to do tonight. So I got the nice surprise of having some time to kill all evening long.

I opened photoshop and whipped up some cell shading. This is my first attempt at ever doing it, but I think it turned out nicely.

Look ma, I’m a cartoon!

Domican Republic Photos

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

So Renata and I went to the Dominican Republic for last Christmas break.  I haven’t been able to muster up the will to write a complete trip report, as I’ve been busy and have been really struggling to find the effort to post on my blog here.  My side project (building my online porno empire!) has been more on my mind than this here blog has.

But anyways, here are some points about our trip down to the Carribean:

  • Last minute deals are awesome.  It ended up costing $700 for 8 days of all inclusive luxury, including our flights there and back.  An incredible deal considering we got to stay at a 4.5 star resort.  We were very impressed and enjoyed the resort we were at.  It’s called the Flamenco Grand Occidental in Peurto Plata, and I highly recommend it.
  • Do not stay at any resort under 4 stars… we looked around and anything under 4 is pretty sketchy.
  • $40/hour for a wicked massage is well worth it.  Mmm… the perfect way to destress after a long school term.
  • ATV’ing/Quadding is super simple but retardedly fun at the same time.  We got to spend half a day zipping around on ATV’s through some sugar cane fields and some small towns.
  • There were some gorgeous waterfalls there that you can actually climb up.  We managed to climb up 7 of the 27 falls there, and slid/jumped our way down the smooth rock.  It was absolutely surreal and gorgeous.  The highlight of our trip.
  • Bartering is a way of life there, learn this art or else you’ll get swindled very easily.  My first day there I got suckered into buying some cheap jewellery for $40US.  I’m sure I could’ve bought such things for like $5 elsewhere.
  • We learned that the average person makes only $200 CAD a month there.  Tipping them will really make their day as they value the money so much more than we do.  What’s a buck or two at the bar when all your drinks are all included?

Anyways, those are only a few fragments of what I can remember.  I wish I had written something (anything!) about the trip as soon as I got back, but I can never get around to doing that when I travel.

I posted a bunch of photos from our trip here:
