Reading Week

After a week of cramming and stressing over midterms, reading week is finally here.

I flew back in Ottawa for Reading Week to spend time with Renata. It’s great to see her again.  The air at home in Edmonton is once agained strained with more drama involving my brother.  So it’s a double bonus of being back here in Ottawa.

I flew in on Saturday with a chance to just veg out and destress.

Sunday we had dim sum with my friend Wei and his girlfriend to celebrate Chinese New Year.  This year is the year of the pig, and it’s my year as well!  Yes, I am a piggy.  It was good to see Wei, and he had some really good ideas for my porn website.  I guess he’d be one to know the business too :-p

Renata and I headed over to Bushtaka to buy some gear for our upcoming trip to the rockies. A 10 day backpack is no casual thing, so we have to look at gear really seriously.  The most important thing on our minds is weight and versatility.  Clothes and other things have to weigh a minimal since we’ll be lugging around a 10 days worth of food.  Every ounce adds up, so keeping every ounce off our backs really counts.

With that in mind, we bought a ton of merino wool clothes.  I have never spent so much money on clothes in my life. My T-shirt cost me $140, and my “heavier” sweater-like shirt cost me $200. Merino wool boxers came up to be like $50 a pair, and the long jongs were twice that much.  I also got a nice “packlite” windbreaker/rainjacket that weighs a few ounces for about $200.  For a university student like me, it’s a ton of money.  Well, it’s actually an insano amount of money for me.  But it is worth it.

Merino wool can be worn continuously for many days (and supposedly for weeks) without it ever getting stinky.  The stuff doesn’t let bacteria fester like in cotton (and especially like in synthetic “dry-fit” stuff).  So that means I only need just a few shirts and boxers to last me the whole 10 days.  Lovely hey?  It’s also an amazing material in terms of temperature moderation and moisture wicking.  So it’s quite awesome.

Anyways, today I just vegged around at home and fixed some stuff at her place.

My week looks to be pretty chill and fun.  It’s even given me time to relax and blog!
